A voluntary blood donor drive has become an annual event in the life of the six Rotary Clubs in the special Chinese administrative region of Macau - a former Portuguese colony.  The drive is more important than ever. The local blood bank is out for non-Asian blood.

Non-Asian residents and foreign visitors to the special Chinese administrative region of Macau are urgently wanted by the local blood transfusion center if they have the blood type Rh D negative, it was announced at a press conference prior to the 2007 Blood Donation Day.

With a population of more than half a million people, the region is one of the most densely populated in the world. The economy is largely based on tourism, and with many non-Asian residents, the Macau Blood Transfusion Centre has a problem: It is in constant need of the blood type Rh D negative, which is rare in Asian populations.

The Rotary blood donor drive in Macau, a former Portuguese colony, began in the Rotary year 2001-02 in conjunction with the Macau Blood Transfusion Centre.

Macau is part of District 3450, formed in 1988, also including Hong Kong and Mongolia. The oldest of the now six clubs in Macau - Rotary Club of Macau - dates back to1947.
