District Programs for blood and organ donations in Australian District 9680.

Rotary District 9680, New South Wales in Australia, has institutionalized District Programs for voluntary blood and organ donations, according to the district's website.

The blood donation program - the Vampire Cup - was started by Rotary Club of Umina Beach  and encourages Rotarians to become regular blood donors. By June 2007, the Vampire Cup covered the majority of the 68 clubs in the district with approximately 2,100 Rotarians. D-9680 is the premier district of Sydney.

Each blood donation is recorded by the Blood Bank and registered in the name of the club. The club with the highest number of donated blood units receives the Vampire Cup for a year plus a carton of red wine, the program's coordinator, Past President Peter Doherty, RC Umina Beach, tells www.ourblooddrive.org. Peter Doherty can be contacted at peterdoherty258@hotmail.com

According to the district's web site, the organ project donor shall provide an opportunity for Rotary members to participate and to gain commitment from their friends and colleagues to register os organ donors. The aims of the program are:

  1. To increase the availability of donor organs in Australia.
  2. To promote the awareness to all Australians of the Organ Donation Program.
  3. To provide an Australian Community Service Project for all Rotarians to participate at minimal cost to those Rotarians and to their Rotary Clubs.
