The Madras Rotary Central Club in  Chennai, India, is looking for club(s) in other countries who might be interested in a joint 3-H Grant Project in support of needed expansion and replacement of old equipment at the Madras Central TTK VHS Blood Bank. The project costs 166,650 US dollars.

The blood bank was established in 1997 as a joint project of the Rotary Club of Madras Central, TTK Group and Voluntary Health Service. The facility is operated as a non-profit organization.

Chennai - formerly known as Madras - is India's fourth largest metropolitan city, India's third largest commercial center,  and the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu. The city serves as a major center of medical care in Asia.

The objectives of the blood bank are:

  • To provide high quality safe blood and blood components at an affordable cost.

  • To provide free blood and components to the most needed who cannot afford to pay for themselves.

  • To provide round-the-clock service.

"By giving free blood and blood domponents to the poor and needy, we are performing a critical role in Chennai, India", says  P.T. Prabhakar, Chariman of the Madras Central RC's Blood Bank Committee.

From the founding of the blood bank, the Rotary Club of Madras Central procured equipment at the cost of 285,000 US dollar through a 3-H grant from The Rotary Foundation. In addition, the club financed the construction of the blood bank building.

The Voluntary Health Service provided the land on which to build as well as the technical assistance and the medical staff.

The TTK Group is known for bringing corporate governance to charitable and social services and has taken the responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the blood bank.
