Every 45 minutes someone is diagnosed with leukaemia in Germany. In coorperation with the Institute for Blood Transfusion of the University of Cologne, Rotaract Club of Cologne decided to help out.  A drive was held at the university cafeteria. 260 students voluntered. Report by Maike van Haak, club president 2006-07, who managed the project.

The Rotaract Club of Cologne, Germany asked students at a cafeteria at the University of Cologne:

Would you like to save a life?

After two successful projects supporting a relief organization named  ShelterBox

Disaster Relief Worldwide, the Rotaract Club of Cologne decided to run another venture. Members of the Rotaract Club tried - in corporation with the Institute for Blood Transfusion of the University of Cologne    - to convince as many young people at the university campus as possible to typify their stem cells.

Every 45 minutes someone is diagnosed with leukaemia  in Germany , especially young people of our age. Stem cell transplantation  is the only chance for a cure for many of these people - assuming they find a suitable donor. Therefore we decided to run the project in the cafeteria of Cologne University - this way we could make sure to reach as many young people as possible.

As a very positive result of our l ast action day in the fall of 2005, we are more than happy to announce that two donors were found- two lives were saved This has been a great success - however, one patient in four still waits in vain. This motivated us to run another action day.

Two weeks before the project day we plastered the university buildings with 350 posters and handed out about 3000 flyers to interested students. Then June 21 arrived and 20 Cologne Rotaractors started to talk to students en masse to convince them of the absolutenecessity to typify their stem cells. The great result: during the day, 260 students followed our campaign and became potential life savers.

Again, a big thank you to all students, the Institute of Blood Transfusion of the University of Cologne and its employees who made this project a great success.
