INTRODUCTION

Initiated by Past President Alfredo Ritchie, Rotary Club of Macau in 2001, Macau Rotary Blood Donation Day has been a joint service project of the six Rotary Clubs in Macau and Macao Blood Transfusion Service of the Health Bureau (http://www.ssm.gov.mo/cts/en/homepage/news.php ) for 13 consecutive years.

OBJECTIVE

To arouse the public concern towards blood donation.

GOAL

Due to the economic boom in Macau since 2004, number of Caucasians visiting and living in Macau has prominently increased. Since 2007 the “give blood” drive strived to encourage more local Caucasians to donate blood regularly in order to raise the local blood bank’s negative-blood supply. Only 5 out of 1000 Asians have RhD negative blood whereas there are 14 – 15 out of 100 Caucasians have RhD negative blood.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

·         Every year, the said project would be hosted by one of the six Rotary Clubs in Macau.

·         Based on the budget proposed by the host club, each club will contribute the same amount as project fund. In 2014, each club contributed around US$1,250. The said budget includes the cost of the following:

o    Production of promotional posters

o    Variety Show (opening ceremony, performance, stage backdrop, audio visual equipments)

o    On site photo exhibition and promotional booth

o    Press conference

·         A convenient indoor venue (for blood donation) that has direct and easy access to another outdoor venue (for opening ceremony, variety show, promotional booth and photo exhibition of Rotary Club activities) will be chosen.

·         Macau Blood Transfusion Service is responsible to set up the blood drive venue.

·         Rotary Clubs involved are responsible to

o    Promote the said event to fellow Rotarians as well as the public. Since 2007, the organizing committee has directly communicated with those large organizations that have high percentages of Caucasian work force and gained their support for the give blood drive.
